How to find self-fulfillment, when we can not travel due to COVID
Travel in your backyard during COVID by Yogita Ridgley
We’re very lucky in Australia and in New Zealand when it comes to the pandemic; cases are now minimal, and borders are beginning to reopen.
For many though, who are as passionate about interstate or overseas travel as I am, we’re waiting with bated breath until it is safe to jet-set again.
Ten years ago, when I set off on my first solo travel experience, I didn’t need to think about restrictions, all I was focused on was rediscovering my authentic self and using a new experience to remove years of trauma.
Traveling solo allows you to step out of your comfort zone. You cannot see the complete picture unless you step out of the frame. That’s what happened when I went on my first trip.
Discovering how much travel changed my own life, it’s been my ambition to help other women realise positive mental, physical, and emotional health, by taking charge and making change.
But, how do we benefit from travel during a pandemic?
We just need to take a different perspective. Even within a pandemic, we can still have a similar ‘stepping out of the frame’ experience.
I love to travel and I miss it, but it’s important not to let being unable to travel upset us. Where we live is beautiful, and there are lots to see.
The most important thing to do is to consider where you can find fulfillment in your own ‘backyard’. Go on, plan your next ultimate ‘staycation’ and while you do, consider these five steps:
1. Say yes to new experiences: To liberate yourself from the challenges and the beliefs you currently have, look at the world with an open mind and be open to new experiences, no matter how random they might be. In your home town, this might include trying a new experience, perhaps a meditation class, Thai chi in the park, or even roller skating! You may find yourself good at something new, or terrible, but you can have lots of laughs trying!
2. Accept yourself, and others: People within your own community have different cultures and beliefs. Take the time to appreciate the diversity of society by seeing things from other’s perspectives. Attend church or a Buddhist temple, or even enjoy a new cuisine that you’ve never experienced.
3. Switch up your fashion: Step outside your comfort zone with the clothing you wear! Many of us have clothes we’ve bought on a whim but we’ve never worn possibly due to being self-conscious. If you usually wear blacks, try florals, and if you usually wear florals, try blacks or metallics! I’d love to hear if any new styles stick with you after your ‘staycation’.
4. Have fun, but look after yourself: Trying new things can make you feel vulnerable – that is why it’s called ‘getting out of your comfort zone’. But even while trying new experiences, ensure you keep your safety in mind. Your instincts will rarely be wrong.
5. Remain present: Listen to your senses, and remain present. Go for a new bush-walk, enjoy a face mask at home, or try a new nail salon – do something that enriches your soul. If you find your mind drifting off to a past experience or a future experience you feel anxious about, bring yourself gently back to the present. A great way to do this is by acknowledging five things you can hear, smell, taste or see in that moment.
How do you like to find a refreshed mindset at home? I’d love to hear – comment below!
