Driving into Udaipur was a thrilling adventure, up and down the rolling hills of Aravalli until my eyes spied some beautiful lakes in the distance. Udaipur is known as the “Venice of the East.”The romantic setting of this town attracts visitors from far and near to enjoy the serenity of this beautiful lake city. Elegant Lake Palace sitting in the middle of Lake Pichola, Lush green hills surrounding the lakes with a setting sun shimmering on the back sets the mood for romance. Unfortunately, Indian men did not fancy me ..hehe. This little beauty was founded in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh second as the new capital of Mewar Kingdom.
THINGS YOU MUST SEE AND DO IN UDAIPUR, RAJASTHAN. INDIA
(1) UDAIPUR CITY PALACE
Towering over Lake Pichola, the city palace is magnificent. The balconies, domes, and towers of the castle offer terrific views of the lake, mountains, and city. The amazing part is this complex consists of four major and many minor palaces that collectively make this City Palace.
(2) LAKE PALACE
Was initially called Jagniwas and served as a summer palace for the Royal family. Built-in 1740’s with walls made of black and white marbles finished with precious stones and ornamented niches displaying the history of Udaipur. Walk around the beautiful gardens and fountains enjoying the pillared terraces and columns lined courtyards. This palace is now a heritage hotel offering 66 luxurious room and 17 grand suits. The main attraction of this palace is it sits in the middle of Lake Pichola as if it is floating.
(3) MONSOON PALACE (SAJJAN GARH PALACE)
Nesting on the top of Bansdara hills, this 19th-century palace was used as a monsoon palace and hunting lodge by its builder, Maharana Sajjan Singh. This palace attracts visitors from all over the world because of the history and the breathtaking views of lakes and mountains. Great place to watch the sunset and as the night falls you can enjoy the city of Udaipur come alive.
(4) AHAR MUSEUM
This archeological museum is small but impressive. The displays are unique, and some are as old as 5000 years. Take your time to enjoy the repository of antiques, coins, earth pots, sculptures among others. The main attraction seems to be the metal statue of Lord Buddha and image of God Surya.
(5) JAGDISH TEMPLE
This three storied building was built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Shing 1, with Indo – Aryan style of architecture. The halls are painted with gorgeous images displaying the stories of Hindu religion. Enjoy the carved ceiling and pillars. Jagdish temple is a place of worship for locals, as a tourist remember to respect this by wearing appropriate clothes.
(6) FATEH SAGAR LAKE
Surrounded by hills and woodlands, this magical lake is connected to Lake Pichola by a canal. Famous for boating on the blue water of the lake, while enjoying the serenity of the surrounding. Believe it or not, there is a garden amidst the lake, Nehru Park, which is a boat-shaped restaurant.
(7) LAKE PICHOLA
Picturesque lake of Rajasthan located in the heart of the city. The oldest and one of the largest lakes of Udaipur. Built in 1362, by Pichhu Banjara. The beautify backdrop of rolling hills gives this lake more an enchanting vibe when you are cruising through the calm waterways, enjoying the views, all the palaces, temples, city, and the sunset. A boat ride in the lake around at sunset is a must. Take as many photos as your heart desires but remember to put that camera down and just enjoy the moment.
